Summer Heat Review
By Sweet Daddy Siki

7/30/08

July in South Florida means intense heat outside and Summer Heat inside the Coral Springs Gymnasium. I and over 450 fans attended the July show and let us get down to reviewing the good, the bad and the ugly.

We started with an MC of sorts who walked through the crowd building up for the matches. I think this idea has some merit and would suggest the MC dress up a notch to stand out and to bring out some wrestlers to the CCW backdrop to interview them. There is a lot of potential in pre match interviews to build up grudges and create more controversy.

-Our first match was with a former regular in CCW, Tommy Vandal. Tommy Vandal was welcomed back with open arms in his return to CCW. His opponent this evening was the German Reiken. Two things about Reiken always stand out. His entrance music which is great and his square skull. The rest of him sort of never lives up to the entrance. Reiken delivered some of the weakest forearm smashes I have seen in years. Tommy Vandal on the other hand, delivered great chops with a sound that everyone in the Gym could hear. Vandal had Reiken chopped to pieces before delivering a great super kick which ended the match.

-Former Davie Mayor Harry Venis came out with Alex G for a confrontation with Ram Man. Ram Man still does not wish to join Mayor Venis's stable and is upset with his former tag team partner Alex G working with him. Mayor Venis justified every dirty trick done by Alex G, including pummeling the CCW female students as part of what it takes to make money in CCW. Ram Man knew something was going to happen and beat Alex G and Mayor Venis back to the dressing room to the cheers of the fans. If I was Mayor Venis, I would not fully trust former friends and tag partners to always be at each other's throat. On a few occasions I have seen Alex G and Ram Man together and Mayor Venis may find out that money only goes so far in buying loyalty.

-Next up is a tag match between newcomers The Maddox Brothers and the Mexican team of Ben Dejo and Zero. The Maddox Brothers in my opinion are better as a team then in singles as they naturally wrestle with each other and think like a team. Ben Dejo seems to have a role in tag matches of getting the stuffing beat out of him and being tossed around like the piñata he brings with him to the ring. Zero? That is a different story. I have no clue what Zero is supposed to be except the crowd found his mesh shirt, leather pants and boyish face to be more made for a rough night of wrestling in South Beach with an old guy instead of being in a ring here. On top of that, Zero has this ridiculous dark smear of makeup across his face .

Ben Dejo worked well with the Maddox brothers in taking one back flip after another from them. One great move had the Maddox Brothers do a double arm back flip on Dejo into a double slam to the mat, leading to the win.

My suggestion to Zero is that if he keeps the makeup smear on his face that he change his name to "Dirty Sanchez" when he teams with Ben Dejo.

-A six man tag was next with JB Cool, Pablo Marquez and Matt Bateman squaring off against Anthony Michaels, Mikal Koloff and Shane McLane. My opinion of six man tag matches is that they only work when there is a lot of anger between the two sides. Here I had the impression that there was more animosity within the teams instead of against each other. I sensed some friction between Pablo and JB Cool over who was the leader of the team while Shane let Koloff take a beating as Anthony Michaels was still preoccupied with taking off his shirt to hand to Vyper.

Koloff is slowly getting better and needs to grow a traditional Russian beard like Ivan Koloff to age himself a few years. Pablo has just returned from a European tour and took over the match to the point that JB was not smiling anymore. On the other side we had Shane McLane wondering why he got stuck with his partners instead of moving up the card. Poor Mikal Koloff took the loss as Shane basically left him and Michaels to fend for themselves. I really do not blame Shane as I remember the golden years of him and Dok RIvers as a tag team.

-The Sons of Liberty with their female valet/manager were up next with a title shot against long time champs The Syrian Slasher and American Taliban with The Snakemaster at their side. Occasionally , the excitement of rookies may make up for their inexperience in garnering a gold belt. Tonight was not the night for the Sons of Liberty. You do not stay tag champs for two years unless you know how to survive every combination out there and have lost blood and a lot of sweat in doing so. The Sons of Liberty had the champs on the run till the Syrian Slasher slowed everything down to a crawl. I do think his game plan is to let the American Taliban take every move and blow to tire out the other team before he tags in. It may seem unfair, but it works. Their is no comparison between a multi year veteran like Snakemaster and the valet of the Sons of Liberty. The end came quickly when an Irish whip was reversed by the champs and Lady Liberty grabbed the feet of her team , causing one of The Sons of Liberty to hit the mat. 1,2,3 , it was over and the champs were still champs.

-Another tag team bout was up next with Dustin Rhodes and Bruno Sassi facing a new team called "Dade County Collision". DDC sounds like the name of an auto body shop in Miami. DDC has Kaotic Romeo teaming with a newcomer with an eyepatch. Maybe the eyepatch was supposed to scare the other team, instead, Bruno had the crowd laughing as he was making fun of him by placing one hand across his eye in taunting him. DDC held their own with Rhodes and Sassi with chops and bumps being taken by everyone. The end came with a double pin by Rhodes and Sassi which led to some words being exchanged the them after the match.

Seth Gregg was in the corner of Sassi and Rhodes and tried to calm them down. Seth was wearing a new shirt which was huge. >From my vantage point I swear the logo on his shirt was the burger chain "Checkers". When he came to my side of the ring I could see that it was really "Dickies". Dade County Collision has nothing to be ashamed of. They held their own with Dustin and Bruno and should return to take on more teams.

-The finals of the CCW SEC title was now going to be settled between JT Flash and Kahagas. Kahagas came with his manager Vicious Vinny to the ring. That was a site to behold as Vinny wore a Kimono and looked like a disheveled old man who was missing from Century Village. I did not know whether to boo him or Baker act him as he stumbled around the ring. JT Flash and Kahagas exchanged terrific chops back and forth . Both wrestlers committed big mistakes during the match. Kahagas pulled up JT's shoulders at the 2 count in an arrogant move. JT allowed Kahagas to catch his breath instead of moving in for the kill. Somehow Vicious Vinny tripped up JT who was beaten by Kahagas. During the end of the match, the kimono of Vinny came off and he was in his shorts and I wished someone could have Baker acted him to save us all. Kahagas placed JT in a nerve/choke hold and held on tight until Pablo Marquez came out to make the save.

At this point I think JT needs some advice on pro wrestling . Pablo now wants to avenge the choke out of JT by getting a title shot against Kahagas at the next CCW card. How is it that JT is now yesterday's news as his supposed friend Pablo has a title shot and JT does not?

-A woman's championship match with the champ Sybil Pageant facing newcomer Kellie. Kellie looked real good here and the crowd loved her. I have been watching Sybil for over two years and I must admit that she moved more in this match than she has in those two years combined. The two of them put on a great match until Calypso and Betsy Ruth hit the ring to put the boots to Kellie. A DQ was issued which ended a great ladies match. Instead of a tag match, I would rather see a lumberjill match to let Kellie and Sybil go at it again. They work very well together and Kellie has more charisma than Calypso and Betsy Ruth combined.

-Our final match of the evening is for the CCW title with champ Dok Rivers facing The Warlord. Dok did the smart thing and stayed away from The Warlord as he was not going to have the strength to beat him hand to hand. Dok moved very carefully and for a while had The Warlord tired out. Mayor Venis probably did not have enough confidence in Dok Rivers to beat the Warlord and had Kahagas and others run out to jump The Warlord. Other wrestlers soon entered the ring and we had a brawl with everyone in the ring as the ref issued a DQ and Dok left with the belt.

Dok left with the belt, but the crowd was not happy as it wanted more action and a clear winner. Dustin and Bruno had more words and the crowd was informed that some of these problems will be settled in September at the next card.

CCW built up the next card in September, however, I think having two DQs- one right after another- did not sit too well with the crowd. Mayor Venis is back and plotting more mayhem while the CCW tag champs need some new opponents to build up for another end of the year blow off. Shane McLane wants to get back to the top as his former partner Dok Rivers went from being an opener to the champ while he was gone. Pablo Marquez jumps another notch while JT better learn more about the business so he does not drop to the basement.

If you follow the action and the story lines, you can see that we have a lot of friction and scores to work their way through the end of the year. Each CCW card should build up to the next and with some new faces and surprises, pro wrestling will continue to flourish in Coral Springs.

See you in September.
