September Fallout Review

Sometimes in life we have days where a lot of unexpected little things add up to a not so perfect day. The September 6th CCW card was one of those.

Upon entering the Coral Springs Gymnasium I saw fewer cars in the parking lot then usual. I believe having a string of hurricanes lurking around the corner kept many people from attending the card. Next, I saw the old half gym layout which makes the product look rinky dink . In the building there was a fresh smell of varnish which was applied to the other half of the building's floor. This caused the half gym layout and I found out that the whole night could have been postponed because of that.

All of this was before a single match started.

The night started off pretty nice with Kellie being the new ring girl instead of Vyper. I have to admit that Kellie oozes something which Vyper seems too young to be able to do. But, we are here for wrestling and let us get started with our first match, a tag team contest.

The team of Irish Jack Hurley and Big Wave Dave squared off against Ben Dejo and Mr. Irresistible. Big Wave came to the ring with another outfit which I think was not good for him. His previous surfer outfit from a past show looked more in character. Ben Dejo has been around for several events and he uses his size to his advantage in wrestling instead of trying to do big man stunts which often fall flat. Irish Jack needs a Leprechaun if he wants to get over with TV wrestling fans while I have to admit, Mr. Irresistible grows on me each month. I figured out that as long as he tries to protect his face from being touched, he adds to the persona. It reminds me of a scene in the great movie "Blazing Saddles" where a character asks the bad guys to hit him everywhere except the face. I missed Mr. I's mirror which should be a standard in ring gimmick for him.

Before the match I had to chuckle at poor Kellie who could not carry all of the junk these 4 guys brought to the ring with them. I think she made two trips to transfer the paraphernalia, not that it is a problem seeing Kellie walk and sway.

This opening act was pretty entertaining with Dave the Wave doing a surf board stance on the backs of his opponents to fan applause. Dejo knows enough to get himself bounced around the ring while Mr. I is getting more ring moves on each card. Irish Jack Hurley pinned Mr. I. after a mistimed jump off of the rope. Good opening match which did what it was supposed to do.

A ladies tag match was up next and I immediately noticed something strange when Betsy Ruth and Sybil Pageant came to the ring to face Jessika Haze and Kimberly. This was supposed to be a ladies grudge match based on outside interference from last month's card. That all stopped in my mind when I noticed that Sybil was now heavier then before while Jessika was now much thinner around the waist than in the past. In fact, I would swear that Haze was wearing the very same corset contraption that Sybil used to wear.

I was not the only one who noticed the extra weight around Sybil's waist as some fans were yelling "Don't hurt the baby" when her belly was being slapped by Betsy Ruth.

This was not one of the better matches in CCW history. I would have the participants review the tape and see how many flubs they can find. Right off the bat, a grudge match needs action before the bell. Someone was screwed on the last card and wants revenge on this card.

Next, wrestling is also audio and not just a visual production. The slaps of the woman here were beyond silly. When a slap is being delivered to the chest of an opponent, if you do not hear a Ric Flair WHOOOOOO, then you are not getting the impact of that move across.

This match also had the contestants moving in slow motion to the point that it was steps below what could be called professional wrestling and more like a sorority sister parody. People expect faster action from woman and the type of spots which are not suitable for men to perform.

This slow motion exercise continued in futility back and forth until time literally stood still in Coral Springs. The announcer Dan Evans was calling the time for the match and announced that one minute was remaining. This one minute was the longest one minute I have ever went through. It was even longer than being told to stand in the corner for a minute in Catholic School 40 years ago.

After a few minutes of everyone looking at each other, Calypso finally staggered to the ring area and took off her warm up top to reveal those pythons. The ref finally called for a double DQ to end this mess as the 6 foot 10 inch Isis came to the ring. In seeing this I was guessing that Isis was to make the save while the villains left in a cowardly fashion. Well, that is what I thought would have happened along with a wrestling match worth watching. The next card will have Isis facing Calypso in her debut match and I do hope she paid attention in wrestling school.

Our next match was a grudge match between Cash Money Alex G and Ram Man. This has been building up for a few months and we expected some hard hitting action. Both wrestlers tested each other's moves and just when we were going to cheer Ram Man for defeating Alex G, Harry Venis hit the ring to join Alex G in putting the boots to Ram Man. Jimmy Snuka came out to ringside and at first we thought that he was going to put Venis in his place. After some stalling, Snuka showed his true colors by smacking the Ram Man while Mayor Venis danced with glee.

This is not the first time the Ram Man has been screwed and I think he needs a manager to watch his back on the next card. Alex G should also watch his back as I would not trust the former mayor of Davie to have his best interests at heart.

A three man tag match was up next with the return of the team of Shane McLane, Anthony Michaels and Mikal Koloff facing JT Flash, Bobby Sanford and JB Cool. JT and Bobby Sanford had on similar green tights, so I expect a tag team out of them for the future. I may start a chant of "Shane is insane" at the next card based on seeing him sporting a Mohawk haircut. Gone are the Canadian flag trunks , the flag itself and his national health insurance. I would be going crazy too if that happened to me. Shane's crew jumped the good guys to get a start but Bobby S gave a great super kick on Anthony Michaels and the ref restarted the match. Koloff looked to be improved, but he needs a more weather-beaten face or a beard to add to his persona.

What I liked in this match was that Koloff gave a great clothesline to JB Cool who flipped backward. The spots were more controlled and meant more as we saw double knee drops , super kicks to near falls to Flash , Sanford and JB finally putting away their opponents. Shane seemed more disenchanted with his team mates and basically abandoned them in the end. You hardly ever see angry Canadians and Shane must be going loco over time.

This card was very tag team top heavy as Hack Meyers and Chris Nelson faced the American Taliban and Reiken. The Syrian Slasher was not there tonight, just one more problem for this CCW card . You really see how much The Slasher adds to the card by his absence. Taliban and Reiken are just not the at the same level with the Slasher to bringing in heat. Snakemaster tried to add some heat to this match with great cane shots, however, it was missing the intensity which the Slasher brings to the ring. Hack Meyers delivered a pile driver on Reiken for the win.

Tommy Vandal returned to face fan favorite Pablo Marquez in singles action. This stepped up the crowd as the action by both was well done. Pablo hit a fantastic drop kick on Vandal while Vandal returned to monkey flip Pablo for a near pin. After a few minutes of action, both wrestlers began trading near pins in this closely matched pairing. The clock was winding down as the time limit was approaching and both wrestlers had near pins, only to have them kicked out or countered. A draw was declared and the crowd was happy as both wrestlers are liked. I thought that the ending was a bit slow, but then again, both guys were just about out of air from the speed of this match.

Our first main event was here with Dustin Rhodes and Bruno Sassi facing Dade County Collision in a rematch from last month. We all felt some friction between Dustin and Bruno last month and Dade County Collision should have been an easy team to beat by them. DCC has talent, but has to really do a beat down on a team like Sassi and Dustin to step up to the next level. Bruno was still making fun of the eye patch wearing DCC member Tito Barrera. A tough guy like this from Miami should have pulled out a pipe and whopped Bruno over the head instead of having his feelings hurt. The match lacked that sort of intensity which makes tag teams want rematches for revenge. I grew up on great tag teams from Mid Atlantic wrestling in the 1970s and 80s and they knew how to build up tag team matches so the roof blew off before, during and after the match. It was not just winning, but giving the butt kicking of a life time to avenge the last beat down and embarrassment you received.

Seth Gregg came to ringside with a suit instead of the previous "Dickies" shirt he was wearing at the last card. Dustin and Bruno won the match, but the fun was only beginning. Dustin left the ring area before Bruno who was still in the ring while Seth was outside. This should tell you something as tag teams work as tag teams in and out of the ring. Cash Money Alex G and The American Taliban hit the ring to give a beating to Bruno and were able to handcuff Bruno to the ring ropes.

Seth Gregg was pretty much useless here as I never saw him move an inch to defend Bruno or even get in the ring. Finally, Seth Gregg ran, or should I say slow walked to the back and Dustin appeared with a chair to clean house. The cuffs were removed and Dustin gave a chair shot to Bruno's head which layed him out.

Now this is where one more misfire can be added to tonight's show. Dustin gave Bruno a powerful enough wack that he expected Bruno to wear the crimson mask. Dustin hovered over the fallen Bruno expecting the blood to start flowing as he was going to bask in the plight of the fallen Bruno. Well, Dustin waited, and waited as I waited, Bruno waited and the crowd waited for the rivulets to start flowing. Finally , after some awkward moments, a small trickle, on par with a morning shaving error in the bathroom, appeared. Bruno rose to his feet and beat Dustin back to the dressing room. Seth Gregg was as useless as they come in defending his steed.

This all leads to rematch with a twist next month as the steel cage will be brought in for those two to battle each other. Seth Greg should train for this match by placing his refrigerator in a steel cage for the few weeks to regain some mobility.

Our final match was for the CCW title with Dok Rivers facing Tomko. Tomko promised a good match , but after a disrespectful slap by Dok, he was ready to leave Dok in a pile of pain. Dok was taking one short cut after another with low blows, ref bumps and running away from Tonko. Tomko was able to counter every move by Dok until Dok had some brass knucks in his hand was getting ready to use them as the ref was distracted.

Tomko got the knucks from Dok and hid them in his trunks for safe keeping as he delivered some great clotheslines to Dok. When you have very few clotheslines in the evening, when they are done with impact and fury, they mean something. Tomko was beating Dok from pillar to pillar and the crowd was shocked when Dok's shoulders did not rise at three. We had a new champ until the ref found the knucks on Tomko and reversed the decision and DQd Tomko.

I think that Dok Rivers is losing his touch as he relies on too many cheap moves to get wins which lowers his game. In his last few title defenses, he has not beat his opponents so decisively that they run like pigs away from rematches. He can retain the belt, but winning this way does not put the fear of God in his next opponent, or in his fans.

I hope that this card was just a case of bad luck multiplied as I did not get the same feedback from the crowd after the last match as from previous cards. With October Fist coming very soon, Bruno and Dustin have to work harder in that cage match to settle their scores with each other. The fans will need to be slowly warmed up with better matches with less slip ups so they are hyped up for the Main Event.

The good thing is that CCW has not had a cage match in I do not know when. This should make that evening real special as the heat builds up as the weather gets cooler.

See you next month at October Fist.
